《福尔摩斯：罪与罚》做为《福尔摩斯》系列作品的最新正统续作，和之前作品相同的是玩家扮演的依旧是那个虚构的名侦探福尔摩斯，并同样需要处理扑朔迷离的各类案件。不同的则不仅仅在画面上有了质的飞跃，在游戏自由性上也同样有所提升。
在这款游戏中，玩家需要通过带领调查8个扑朔迷离的案件来成为真正的侦探，而每一起案件场景都给予了玩家真正的自由。道德选择取代了系列之前作品一贯主张的正义，玩家的任何决定都会对游戏发展和人物声望产生影响，从而造成意想不到的结果。
